The State Government’s Melbourne Metro Project, a nine-kilometer rail tunnel with five new underground stations, announced almost two years ago, is now being revised, as a result it could be a considerable period time before it is finalised. It was recently announced that the cut and cover channel through the city would be too disruptive “could close Swanston Street down for up to two years”, and should be replaced with a more expensive but less disruptive deep tunnel. However the latest info, obtained from a contact within the premier’s office, suggests that there is a third option being considered which may bypass the area. In any event the MMP must be completed before any new lines can be connected to the network.
The Rail to Doncaster Hill might prove too expensive. Although it is estimated to cost between $4 to $6 Billion it must be added to the same estimated cost for works associated with the removal and relocating of the South Morang line from the Hurstbridge/Epping route before the Doncaster Hill railway can be connected. If the combined costs of both works were at the higher end of the estimates, $12 Billion would be required to construct 13.1 km of railway for the sake of Doncaster Hill….hardly cost effective, especially with such limited amounts of Federal funding available.
