MELBOURNE the most livable city in the world?

Too right.

So, to all the planners, developers and councillors, why would you want to change it? And just where did those cities jam-packed with apartments, crawling traffic and block buildings abutting each other with no garden in between rank? All the way down there.

David Cathie, Mordialloc

MELBOURNE is officially the world’s most livable city, thanks to various world crises making other cities less attractive.

“Australia, with a low population density and relatively low crime rates, continues to supply some of the world’s most liveable cities,” Mr  Copestake said.

While Melbourne was crowned Most Liveable City in the World second time, bad news for all concerned Manningham residents with just released Liveable Melbourne 2011 survey (http://theage.domain.com.au/greater-melbourne/the-list-melbourne-suburbs-liveability-ranking-revealed-20111122-1nrv2.html ). Compare to last survey in 2005, almost every suburbs in Manningham are ranked in the bottom half of a total 314 suburbs, and dropped significantly in ranking. Templestowe Lower down 28, Warrandyte down 33, Doncaster down 34, Park Orchards down 24, Doncaster East down 16, Templestowe down 6, Bullen down 37. This is surly a clear verdict on how local planning has been done and implemented for the past 6 years! Many suburbs in Melbourne are doing well, e.g. Wheelers Hills jump 52 places, one key factor is their 9km bike paths. I would imagine a sustainable Manningham would have residents riding a bike around rather than got stuck in traffic under these miserable tall shadows 10m from home.
