  1. Whittens says:

We should not be throwing the baby out with the bath water, so to speak, just because there is division, however, the only way we can stop squabbling between councillors is to elect a new group. There were some councillors who were using the newspapers to promote themselves and to air their opinions. Some have been spending a fortune on re-election material over the last couple of months

  2. Lindel says:

It is now unusual for any government, whether it be State, Federal or local, to get a second term because of greater public scrutiny. I don’t think any of the current crop have done enough to justify another four years. There appears to be number of quality candidates that have better credentials.

  3. Anonyme says:

Councillors are expected to do more than just roll up to an ordinary council meeting once every month. They are expected to perform other duties and responsibilities and share the workload on the various committee meetings and respond to resident’s issues and attend various community engagement activities. No wonder that the community satisfaction with councillors has dropped to a rate of 57%.

    1. Wok says:

It was the dissatisfaction with Council decisions. There was no research on the performance of councillors which would be unfair if they were not assessed individually. Community satisfaction rating out of 100 with how council has performed in making decisions in the interest of the community which has fallen from 60 down to 57. The research was conducted by an independent company on behalf of the state government.

    2. Reg says:

No wonder some of outgoing councillors are keen to get re-elected. They receive almost $500 per week plus a weekly allowance of $186 for expenses for doing very little. They can’t be sacked for non attendance and can get away with it for four years without the community, who they are supposed to be representing, ever knowing it is being ripped off.

  4. Bob says:

I can understand Councillors getting sick of the whole process at the end of a four years. I think they did a good job earlier in their term but like a lot of their colleagues they seem to burn out and the first thing that happens is they stop returning calls from residents and only attend meetings when they have to. Even though a lot are standing for re-election their motives will be different and are unlikely to approach the job with the same gusto they had when first elected. There is also more scrutiny now that details of their attendances are published in the Manningham annual report.

  5. Baystone says:

I would hate to think that the makeup of our council will depend on how much money candidates can muster for their election campaigns. Developer donations are generally paid in cash so there is no way they can be traced unless the candidate declares them which is unlikely given that it would result in immediate expulsion of the councillor and make it very difficult for the developer.

    1. Amotol says:

If their state and federal counterparts can accept donations from Banks and Oil companies etc. I can’t see why council candidates should not be allowed to accept financial support from developers providing they declare the amount and the donor in due course.

  6. Travencore says:

Scrutineers, who have been sorting ballot papers before the actual count is conducted on Saturday 29th of October, are predicting their could be five new councillors elected. One in Heidi, two in Koonung and two in Mullum Mullum.

  7. Mei says:

There are only three out of the nine who look likely to be retained and two of those three are advantaged by being number 1. on the ballot paper and the remainder of the previous council will struggle.

    1. Grafton says:

I am not so sure. It is unusual that all the councillors, except jennifer Yang who retired last year, are standing for re-elction. They have a distinct advantage over the new candidates because they are known. I would be surprised if there were any more than two new councillors.

  8. Rob says:

Below are the 2016 Council Election results…Four mew councillors to replace Grivokstopoulos, O’Brien and Downie who lost and Yang had retired last year.

  9. Cedar says:

These council elections are clearly like a raffle. No disrespect meant to the ability of those candidates lucky enough draw number one on the ballot paper who have been elected. The fairest method is employ the Robson rotation system which provides all candidates with an equal share of every position on the Ballot paper. The current system seems designed to ensure that the best candidates may not be elected while ensuring a constant turn over of councillors.

  10. Frances says:

Sorry to see Meg go we had hoped she would be elected after 8 years of service to the community. Best of luck for the future Meg Downie.

  11. Martin says:

The system of voting must change using a randomised ballot paper. The current system gives candidates drawn at the top of the ballot paper a huge advantage because nine out of ten tines they are elected because of the donkey vote.

  12. Lee Yaun says:

Hello. I vote for Ron Kitchingfan but he no successful. I so disappointed. He no like development near our houses. I hope Mike Zafiroupoulus potect me and Ron from apartments in our street.

    Thank you

  13. Judith says:

The Mayor receives $81,747 per year more than three times that of a councillor.
So you can understand there would be some negotiating for the position such as “if you vote for me to be the Mayor this year I will support you for Mayor next year”. However there is always a reason why the promise is never kept.. such as an argument over a planning decision or what ever and therefore there is no longer a deal.(like Keating and Hawke) I guess that’s just politics however what happens council is destabalised and councillors who had been dudded spend the rest of the term harshly criticising each other publicly where ever they can.
