Australia’s hottest day records remain the same today as when they were published by WMO in 2013. Except for MARREE,  South Australia, which was  49.4°C (120.9°F), but that record was officially broken when the town reached a blistering 49.8°C on January 29, 2026. The WALPEUP temperature shown at 48.1 C on the chart was actually 48.8 C in 2009 and had increased to 48.9 C by 2026.

Brewarrina (NT) recorded a maximum temperature of 48.9 C in December 1912,

Menindee (NSW) recorded a maximum temperature of  49.7 C in January 1939,

Euston (NSW)  recorded a maximum temperature of 48.7 C in January 1939,

Birdsville (Q) recorded a maximum temperature of 49.5 C in January 1939,

Finke (NT) recorded a maximum  temperature of 48.3 C in January  1960,

Oodnadatta (SA) recorded a maximum temperature of 50.7 C in January 1960,

Marree (SA) recorded a maximum temperature of 49.4 C in January 1960,

Whyalla (SA) recorded a maximum temperature of 49.4 C in January 1960,

Mundrabilla (WA) recorded a maximum temperature of 49.8 C in January 1979,

Forrest (WA) recorded a maximum temperature of 49.8 C in January 1979,

Mardie (WA) recorded a maximum temperature of 50.5 C in  February 1988,

Hopetoun (VIC) recorded a maximum temperature of 48.8 C in February 2009,

Walpeup (VIC) recorded a maximum temperature of 48.1 C in February 2009,

Avalon (VIC) recorded a maximum temperature of 47.9 C in February 2009,

St Helens (TAS) recorded a maximum temperature of 41.8 C in January 2009,

Hobart (TAS) recorded a maximum temperature of 41.8 C in January 2013,

Scamander (TAS) recorded a maximum temperature of 42.2 C in January 2009,

Emu Creek Station (WA) recorded a max temperature of 49.8 C in February 1998.
